An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale was registered this morning near the Greek island of Amorgos in the Aegean Sea, reported "Kathimerini", quoted by News.bg.
The earthquake occurred at 9:49 a.m., with its epicenter 20 kilometers southwest of the village of Arkesini.
Three minutes before the main earthquake, a second earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 was registered. In addition, two more earthquakes were reported late last night and early this morning in the area between Amorgos and Santorini, measuring 4.5 and 4.2.
As a result of the ongoing seismic activity, the Greek prime minister ordered schools on the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Anafi and Ios to remain closed until at least Friday. Based on the alarm caused by the series of earthquakes that began in late January, a state of emergency has been declared on the four islands.
Experts warn that the so-called "seismic swarm" in the region could lead to a stronger earthquake or even a limited volcanic eruption in the complex of active volcanoes in the Aegean Sea.
