Costa Rica intends to accept 200 deported migrants from the US, including citizens of India, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, the country's President Rodrigo Chavez said.
“Before, there was chaos with migration. Now the US, which treats us very well because we cooperate closely, has taken matters into its own hands. They asked us to accept 200 migrants from countries like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and India because they cannot process the cases of so many people“, Chavez was quoted as saying by the local publication La Republica.
According to the president, the arrivals will be held in the Center for Temporary Detention of Migrant Workers for three to six weeks, after which they will be repatriated. At the same time, they will be prohibited from leaving the institution's premises. The publication reports that all expenses for the maintenance of migrants deported from the United States will be borne by the American government.
Among the foreigners expelled from the United States will be 50 children. The first plane with 93 people is expected to arrive in Costa Rica on February 20.
US President Donald Trump is taking measures to tighten immigration policy. After taking office on January 20, he signed a decree declaring a state of emergency on the border with Mexico. The US Department of Homeland Security has expanded the powers of US law enforcement agencies, allowing them to deport illegal immigrants under the so-called fast-track procedure, without a decision from an immigration court.
