Hungary has never been so close to leaving the European Union and joining the Russian sphere of influence, said Klara Dobrev, a member of the European Parliament from the opposition Democratic Coalition, during an online press conference, quoted by the Hungarian news agency MTI, BTA reports.
Commenting on a recent statement by Mate Kocsis, leader of the parliamentary group of the ruling Fidesz party, regarding a constitutional amendment that would allow for the expulsion of dual citizens, Dobrev said that “if the government wants to adopt such an amendment, Hungary must first leave the Council of Europe“.
She added that according to the European Charter of Human Rights, holders of a country's citizenship cannot be expelled from it.
Dobrev expressed the opinion that Fidesz was “making up an excuse“ for leaving the Council of Europe, which could be a step towards the country's exit from the European Union.
