The death toll from the 8.2-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar on March 28 has surpassed 1,600. Neighbouring Thailand was also hit by the disaster, and tremors were felt in China and Vietnam.

The UK will provide up to £10m ($13m) in aid for victims in Myanmar. According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the kingdom, these funds will be used to provide humanitarian assistance to residents of areas that were hit hardest by the natural disaster.

“Our partners on the ground are already mobilizing resources to deliver humanitarian aid and this financial package of £10 million will help support these efforts“, said Baroness Jennifer Chapman, deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
