A magnitude 5.2 earthquake has struck northeast of San Diego, the US Geological Survey said, The Independent reports.

The quake struck just after 10am local time on Monday morning, with its epicentre about four kilometres south of Julian, California - a small town known for its bakeries and apple pies.

Riley Ozuna, owner of Julian Cafe & Bakery, said several cups had fallen to the ground at her shop. “But everything is fine” she told the Associated Press.

Light fixtures and shelves rattled in San Diego, but the tremors were felt as far north as Los Angeles.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Office said there were no reports of damage or injuries.

"It went on for so long I was worried it might cause damage, but luckily it stopped before anything started falling off the walls," a San Diego resident told The Independent.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has been notified of the quake, his office said in a statement on social media.

"The state is coordinating with local authorities to assess the damage and if an emergency response is needed," the added statement.
