Three people died, one was seriously injured and another was missing after a cable car in an area near Naples, southern Italy, fell to the ground, the Italian news agency ANSA reported, citing sources close to the rescue services.
The incident occurred on Monte Faito, a peak about 45 km southeast of Naples.
"The cable car at the top has crashed, we fear there are casualties", wrote on "Facebook" Umberto De Gregorio, head of the public transport company "EAV" (EAV), which operates the cable car. De Gregorio called the incident a "tragedy".
Several Italian media outlets reported that one of the cables supporting the cabin had snapped.
In 2021, 14 people died in northern Italy when a gondola fell from a cable car connecting Lago Maggiore to a nearby mountain, Reuters recalls.
