A solemn ceremony was held in St. Petersburg to raise the Russian national flag aboard the nuclear icebreaker "Yakutia", which is being built by order of "Atomflot" (a Rosatom enterprise). Raising the national flag is an established tradition in the fleet.
“Our fleet of nuclear icebreakers already has eight ships. By 2030, the number of icebreakers on the Northern Sea Route should reach 17. This year we reached a new maximum and set a new record for the total volume of cargo traffic on the NSR - we are close to 38 million. tons.“, Alexey Likhachev, Director General of the Russian state corporation “Rosatom“, emphasized during the ceremony.
With a length of 172.7 meters and a minimum working draft of 9.03 meters, “Yakutia“ is the fourth icebreaker built under “Project 22220“. Its expected service life is 40 years. The ship was launched in November 2024, and since December 1 of the same year the icebreaker has been undergoing factory sea trials.
The enterprises of “Rosatom“ ensure the strategic development of the Arctic zone of Russia by establishing regular cargo traffic, building new nuclear icebreakers and modernizing the infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route. The development of this logistics corridor and the increase in the volume of transportation along it are top priorities for the Russian state corporation.
