Advisor to the Prime Minister, official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar Majid bin Mohammed al-Ansari called information about possible gas supplies to Europe through the territory of Syria and Turkey rumors.
“We have all seen speculation in the media about this gas pipeline, this is nothing more than media speculation“, he said, in response to a journalist's question about how Doha assesses the prospects for building a gas pipeline to Turkey through Syria for gas supplies to Europe.
“We in Qatar are committed to supporting the Syrian people in terms of humanitarian and technical assistance, as in the case of the Damascus International Airport, as well as discussing all types of technical assistance for the reconstruction of infrastructure. At the economic level, as for gas supplies, we cannot say anything on this issue“, he added. Al-Ansari noted that Doha is currently focused "on maintaining stability" in Syria and "meeting the needs of the Syrian people."
After the change of power in Syria in December 2023, a number of media outlets wrote about the possible resumption of the project to build a gas pipeline from Qatar to Turkey through the territory of Syria and other Arab countries to supply gas to Europe. The possibility of building a Qatar-Turkey pipeline has been discussed since 2009, but the implementation of the project, as stated in Ankara, was postponed due to the resistance of the former Syrian authorities. On January 4, the head of the Turkish Ministry of Energy, Alparslan Bayraktar, said that Qatari gas could be supplied to Europe via Turkey, provided that a safe transport system is established and stability in Syria and the region is ensured.
Qatar ranks 3rd in the world in natural gas reserves and 6th in production. According to the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, in November 2024, Qatar became the third largest exporter of liquefied natural gas after the United States and Australia.
