3,000 tickets were issued to drivers with old cars for violations in the low-emission zone in Sofia for the 90 days it was in operation, the Sofia Municipality announced.
There were around 2,000 violations per day in the small center of Sofia during the ban. This is 10 times less than in November, the month before the introduction of the low-emission zone last winter, Nova TV reported.
If violations return to their original levels, then the time of the zone's operation could be increased to more than 90 days a year next season.
“Around 1,500 acts have already been served and paid for, however, this process will continue until the end of May, so it is possible that someone will be fined even after the zone comes into effect”, said Sofia's deputy mayor for “Ecology” Nadezhda Bobcheva.
”A violator commits about 3 or 4 violations per day, if this system is automated, we will serve them faster, they will know that they are violators, this will also reduce recidivism. There are violators with 60-70 violations, which shows that they either don't know or this fine hasn't arrived in time," she pointed out.
