The protest ended in the center of Sofia, between the presidency and the Council of Ministers building, declaring against the "war" on the road. The protest was under the slogan "Enough death on the road". Traffic on "Tsar Osvoboditel" Blvd. has been restored, but there continues to be an increased police presence in the area.
Those gathered insisted on decisive measures against the "war" on the roads and for road safety. With a minute of silence, they honored the memory of 12-year-old Siyana, who died in an accident on March 31 near the village of Telish in Pleven.
One of the reasons for the accidents is the driving license exams. We are fighting not only with road killers, but also with the state administration, Krasimir Georgiev, Chairman of the Board of the Association for Qualification of Motorists in Bulgaria, told the media. According to him, well-prepared drivers can cover, to some extent, shortcomings such as poor road infrastructure and traffic organization. We want digitalization and uncompromising training, Georgiev said.
We have two very clear appeals, one is to citizens – to realize that we ourselves are half of the problem with our failure to comply with the laws, and the second is towards the rulers, who must deal with the problems of road injuries, told the media Julieta Mihaylova from the initiative committee “Together against madness on the roads“.
She added that a concept that produces results is needed as soon as possible. The problem affects at least five ministries and we cannot talk about one specific reason, Mihaylova said and explained that they will continue to demand more legislative changes.
In the village of Telish in Pleven, people also took to the peaceful civil protest with demands for decisive measures against the war on the roads and for more safe roads. The protesters are gathering in the center of the village, and then they will head to the intersection of the I-3 Pleven - Lukovit road. They carry posters with the slogan "Enough with death on the road", as well as "Siyana died, corruption survived" and "Collective irresponsibility is killing our children".
The serious accident in which 12-year-old Siyana died became the occasion for protests in the country with demands for urgent measures to stop the "war" on the roads. The road accident occurred on March 31 on a section of the main road in the Humata area between a heavy truck and a passenger car. A few days later, the Council of Ministers decided to secure 36 critical road sections in the country.
