Russia launches massive airstrike on Ukraine, targeting power system - 1

Russia launched a massive airstrike on Ukraine today, using dozens of cruise missiles and drones, the Associated Press and Agence France-Presse reported, as quoted by BTA.

The Russian military has targeted Ukraine's power grid, Energy Minister German Galushchenko said on Facebook. "The enemy continues its terror", he added.

According to the minister, energy ministry officials are doing everything in their power to "minimize the negative consequences for the energy system". He promised to provide details of the damage as soon as the security situation allows.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported multiple drones sent into Ukraine overnight, followed by multiple cruise missile strikes.

Today's attack is the latest in a series of similar strikes that have fueled fears that the Kremlin is aiming to disrupt the country's energy system as winter approaches.

Since the start of its invasion in February 2022, Russia has been attacking Ukraine's energy system, causing repeated disruptions to vital power and water systems during the winter months, in an apparent attempt to break the spirit and resolve of Ukrainians, the AP notes.

Moscow has said it aims to disrupt Ukraine's military-industrial complex.

The previous massive attack on Nov. 28 fired about 200 missiles and drones, temporarily knocking out power to more than a million homes while crews restored power.

Foreign Minister Andriy Szybiga reiterated Kiev's call for Western allies to provide it with 20 more NASAMS, HAWK and IRIS-T air defense systems.
