The US Senate failed to pass a temporary budget bill, the government may shut down

To prevent this from happening, the Senate must vote on it and Biden must sign it by Monday

The US Senate failed to pass a temporary budget bill before midnight Washington time, the C-Span television channel reported.

If the Senate does not pass the bill and it is not signed by the current US President Joe Biden by Monday, then the federal government will de facto shut down. However, Biden has already said he will support the bill.

Earlier today, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives of the US Congress passed a temporary funding bill to avoid a government shutdown, rejecting US President-elect Donald Trump's request to raise the debt ceiling by trillions of dollars, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The law will extend the administration's funding until March 14, providing $100 billion for disaster-stricken states and $10 billion for farmers.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said that lawmakers will consider raising the national debt ceiling in January. Trump is insisting that this be done by the time he takes office on January 20, Reuters reports.

The US government has been shut down 21 times since 1976, when the current budget reconciliation process was adopted, with the longest shutdown being during Donald Trump's first administration, which lasted 35 days from late 2018 to 2019.
