A Siberian resident has been sentenced to 9 years in prison for treason in favor of Ukraine, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said today, quoted by Agence France-Presse, BTA reported.

The Khanty-Mansiysk (Western Siberia) district court found Sergei Loshakov guilty of sending money to the Ukrainian armed forces and sentenced him to 9 years in a strict regime prison, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing the FSB.

This Surgut resident, who is "hostile to Russia's foreign and domestic policies", got in touch via the "Telegram" messaging app with an unidentified person, after which he transferred funds to the Ukrainian army. Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in Ukraine in February 2022, the number of trials in Russia for "treason", "terrorism", "sabotage" and "espionage" has increased, AFP notes.
