German Chancellor Stresses Importance of US Relations Ahead of Trump's Inauguration - 1

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed the importance of close cooperation with the US in an upcoming interview published in the "Rheinische Post", specifying that transatlantic relations are of utmost importance for both Germany and Europe. According to Scholz, the US played a crucial role in building democracy in West Germany, and NATO continues to be a guarantor of the region's security, quoted by BTA.

"Transatlantic relations are of utmost importance for both Germany and Europe," the Chancellor said. "The United States plays a fundamental role in our stability and security."

Sholz called for a stable relationship with the United States, stressing that the need for such an alliance remains particularly relevant with Trump's inauguration for a second term, expected later today.

Europe as an independent global player

In the context of Trump's upcoming leadership, Scholz emphasized the need for Europe to be able to act independently. He highlighted the EU's economic weight, stressing that more than 400 million Europeans are able to create their own power on the global stage.

"The European Union can also build its own power," the Chancellor noted. "We are a powerful economic union and can play a decisive role in global affairs."

Sholz also recalled the importance of basic international rules, such as the principle that borders cannot be changed by force. He openly criticized Trump's recent territorial claims to Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal, stating that this principle applies to everyone and must be respected by all participants in the international arena.

Preserving stability and alliances

Finally, Chancellor Scholz also commented on the talks he had with Donald Trump, calling them "good talks in a cordial spirit". Scholz added that several meetings between the two leaders' advisers have also already taken place, ensuring that Germany will not start from scratch in relations with the United States.

He specified that, despite the importance of this transatlantic alliance, Germany has a clear position and will continue to defend democratic principles against populist tendencies. Scholz called for a response to those who want to divide Europe, noting that resistance must be achieved by winning the trust of the people through clear and distinct positions.
