A Chinese court has executed Fan Weiqiu, who drove a car into a group of pedestrians in the southern city of Zhuhai in November, killing 35 people and injuring 45 more, according to BTA.
The attack took place at a sports complex and was determined to be a deliberate act. In December, the court found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to death, stating that his motives were "extremely vile" and the consequences were "particularly severe".
Execution after approval at the highest level
Fang Weiqiu was executed in accordance with a decision of the Supreme People's Court, which approved the order to carry out the sentence. During the trial, the defendant admitted that he acted out of anger stemming from a broken marriage, personal frustrations, and dissatisfaction with the division of property after the divorce.
Another case of mass violence in Jiangsu Province
In a separate case, a man was executed in the eastern province of Jiangsu after killing eight people and wounding 17 in a mass stabbing attack.
Questions about death penalty statistics
China does not release official statistics on the number of executions. However, organizations such as "Amnesty International" estimate that the country executes thousands of people annually, significantly more than any other country. This closes the issue of transparency and raises debate about justice in China.
