Intelligence reports from the United States and its closest allies indicate that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not given up on his goal of taking control of all of Ukraine, NBC News reports, citing four Western intelligence officials and two US Congressional representatives.
All six told the US media that current intelligence suggests Putin still believes he can outpace Ukraine and Europe before eventually taking over all of Ukraine.
According to one of the congressional sources, the US has "intelligence that Putin is not interested in a real peace agreement right now".
A Western intelligence source has noted that Putin “thinks he is winning“ despite significant Russian losses on the battlefield.
The American media sources agree that the Russian president may agree to a “ceasefire“ in Ukraine, as it would give his army time to recover.
They are skeptical about Putin's readiness for real peace, but indicate that he may use the “peace talks” to see what concessions he can get and “return” to the international arena.
The NBC News sources also believe that Putin does not plan to withdraw his troops from Ukraine or to withdraw any troops or equipment from Western Russia.
