Seven arrested after clash with Greek police during rally - 1

Athens police said they had detained 61 people, seven of whom were left in custody, during clashes last night outside the Greek parliament as lawmakers voted on a vote of no confidence in the government over the deadly train crash at the Tempe pass two years ago, the Greek newspaper “Kathimerini“ reported, quoted by BTA.

A rally was held in Athens' Syntagma Square in front of the parliament last night to express solidarity with the families of the victims of the crash in Tempe, northern Greece, which killed 57 people, the ANA-MPA news agency reported.

The clashes came after a rally organized by unions and student organizations.

In a statement, the police said that shortly after 10 p.m., masked individuals began throwing broken pieces of marble, flares and Molotov cocktails at the security forces.

The police repelled the attackers with tactical measures, without using other means, until they had ensured the removal of the main part of the attackers, the statement said.

In Thessaloniki, police detained about 30 people after incidents last night.

Greece's center-right government survived a no-confidence vote in parliament last night over a deadly train crash in 2023.
