Thousands of people gathered today at the "Dam" square in Amsterdam to participate in the Feminist March on the occasion of International Women's Day. Among them are not only women, but also many men, the National News Agency of the Netherlands ANP reported, quoted by BTA.
In the afternoon, the participants will march from "Dam" square to "Museumplein" square. Before the march, there will be a stage program on "Dam". Trams around the square are being diverted.
The feminist march, which is the successor to the Women's March, is organized in the context of International Women's Day to defend women's rights. According to the organizers, which include feminist movements and civil society organizations, it is now more important than ever for people to take to the streets.
"Feminism is under pressure worldwide, we are seeing a growing backlash against gender equality, human rights and social justice," co-organizers from WOMEN Inc. commented on social media.
Last year, the protest march was canceled due to security concerns.
International Women's Day will also be marked in other places in the Netherlands. A project for a monument against femicide will be presented in Rotterdam. The work aims, among other things, to honor the memory of 16-year-old Humeira, who was killed by her ex-boyfriend, as well as other murdered women.
A truck converted into a mobile cinema will screen a short film about the murder of women in the central square of Groningen. The truck belongs to a man who lost his daughter to such a murder.
Red high-heeled shoes were placed yesterday in the "Stopera" building complex in Amsterdam and on the "Stadhuisplein" square in Rotterdam as a protest against the murder of women.
