The European Commission (EC) may impose tariffs on the import of electric vehicles from China from July 4, as as her investigation revealed “unfair subsidies”, the press service of the EC announced.
„As part of its ongoing investigation, the European Commission has tentatively concluded that China's battery electric vehicle (BEV) value chain benefits from unfair subsidies, posing a threat of economic harm to battery electric vehicle manufacturers. BEV in the EU“, the announcement states.
„The EC has approached the Chinese authorities to discuss these findings and explore possible ways to resolve the issues identified in line with WTO requirements”. “In this context, the Commission tentatively revealed the level of provisional countervailing duties it will impose on imports of battery electric vehicles from China. If negotiations with the Chinese authorities do not lead to an effective solution, these provisional countervailing duties will be imposed from 4 July as a guarantee (in a form to be determined by the customs office of each member state). They will only be imposed if and when definitive duties are introduced”, the EC added.
The European Commission launched an investigation into Chinese electric vehicles last September.
