Poland cancels aid for Ukrainian refugees - 1

In Poland, on July 1, the Law on Assistance to Citizens of Ukraine, which cancels the one-time aid for refugees, comes into force, Polskie Radio reports. The amount of this payment is PLN 300 (EUR 74.4).

The state will also stop paying landlords hosting Ukrainian refugees 40 zlotys (9.92 EUR) per day per person. The Polish government explained this decision with “difficulties in ensuring the reliability of the system”.

„More and more applications for the program are submitted by Ukrainian citizens themselves, which raises doubts as to whether they accommodate people who are members of their families" said the publication of Polskie Radio.

The chairman of the branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Poland in Przemyśl, Igor Gorkov, said that “the future of the refugees looks very uncertain”. “More and more people are looking to us for help after July 1. Often these are people who have nothing to return to“, — Polskie Radio quoted him.

So from 2,000 to 5,000 Ukrainians come to Przemyśl every day, mainly from Kharkiv, Odessa and Sumy Oblast, Gorkov said.

As of the end of May, over 950,000 Ukrainians living in Poland had an active digital PESEL code (individual identification number consisting of 11 digits). Polskie Radio, citing a UN estimate, writes that by the end of 2024, the number of Ukrainian refugees in the republic will reach 1.1 million.

After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, Poland received the most refugees from Ukraine. Thus, only in the first week of the conflict, more than 1 million Ukrainians came there, writes Ag. Reuters. According to a study by the University of Warsaw and the Academy of Economics and Humanities, negative attitudes towards Ukrainian refugees are growing among Polish residents. The most common reason cited by respondents was their “dependent position”.
