Victim of EU-China trade war could to turn out to be pork from Europe, BNT reported.
China is considering imposing anti-dumping duties on its imports. In mid-June, the China Livestock Association filed a complaint and requested China's Ministry of Commerce to investigate and take appropriate measures. The decision is expected by July 4.
China is considering washing pork imports from Europe, in response to an investigation and possible intentions by the European Commission in July to impose tariffs on imports of Chinese electric cars. Intensive negotiations are currently underway, but according to experts, if this happens, changes will be felt very quickly on the pork market in Europe.
Dimitar Mihailov, Executive Director of the Association of Pig Breeders: "The initial effect is that large quantities of unrealized pork will remain on the European market, which will lead to a reduction in prices if the member states fail to reorganize their exports to other countries outside China."
If prices fall - this will reduce production as farmers will lose interest. And this can lead to an increase in prices, albeit in the longer term. To what extent do these possible changes affect the Bulgarian market? Since the beginning of the year, pork production has increased in our country, but we are far from covering our needs on our own. Currently, 60% is imported from Spain, Germany, Belgium. Otherwise, its prices on the markets are between BGN 12 and 15 per kilogram.
Vladimir Ivanov, chairman of the Commodity Exchanges and Markets Commission: "For the last six months, we have observed very weak variations in the price of pork. On an annual basis, the change is 5%. This is almost no change. It has one of the most stable prices."
Dimitar Mihailov, Executive Director of the Association of Pig Breeders: "It is still too early to predict what will happen. There is currently no danger of these prices changing. Everything depends on how the negotiations will develop in the coming months."
China is investigating and considering tariffs not only on pork but also on some dairy products from Europe as well as alcoholic beverages. It is expected that the negotiations with the European Union will end positively, since both parties in the dispute have no interest in a trade war, which would harm them greatly.
