John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council, has expressed support for Kiev's decision to halt Russian gas transit to Europe. According to a spokesman for the outgoing US administration, the move follows “decades of ongoing“ US efforts to “reduce the incredible risks associated with Russian energy dominance in Europe“.
At a regular online briefing for journalists, he also noted that the outgoing US administration is working with European partners to diversify gas supplies after the transit was halted. "We continue to work with Europe to support efforts to expand diversification", Kirby said, noting that 50% of Europe's liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies come from the United States. A White House spokesman said U.S. LNG exports to Europe had played a "key role" in diversifying supplies of the energy carrier.
