MEP Tsvetelina Penkova: "Investments in defense should not be at the expense of social policies" - 1

In the program “The World and Us“ on the Bulgarian National Television, MEP Tsvetelina Penkova presented the positions of the European Socialists on the topics of the future of the defense industry in Bulgaria and in Europe, the clean industrial deal and the impact of the trade war between Europe and the US on the European economy and industry.

Tsvetelina Penkova emphasized that the European Union should strive for greater independence in the field of defense, with the emphasis not on military power, but on socially responsible policy. The European Socialists and the Bulgarian Socialist Party defend the position that increased investments in defense and modernization of military technologies should not be carried out at the expense of funds for social policies and cohesion funds, which are of key importance for countries like Bulgaria. Penkova recalled that diplomacy and peace remain the top priority.

The mechanism for joint defense procurement is currently being discussed in the European institutions, which will allow for more effective cooperation between member states. Penkova pointed out that this is a step towards the creation of uniform standards and modernization of military equipment produced in Europe. She emphasized that Bulgaria has serious traditions and expertise in the defense industry and should be an active participant in the modernization process.

Among other important topics touched upon by the MEP was the development of the Clean Industrial Deal, which is a natural continuation of the Green Deal. “We have already built renewable energy sources and now it is time to use them to revive industry and create high-tech jobs“, said the MEP. She pointed out that the construction of an interconnected electricity transmission network within the EU is critically important for achieving competitiveness and stable electricity prices.

“Europe is working to build a common electricity transmission network that will ensure equal and fair electricity prices for all member states. Bulgaria has a strategic location and can play a leading role in this process, connecting energy flows both along the South-North and East-West axes“, Penkova emphasized.

“Bulgaria has the potential to become a key energy and industrial center within the EU. This will guarantee economic growth, stable electricity prices and the creation of well-paid jobs“, summarized Tsvetelina Penkova.

Regarding trade relations between the EU and the US, Penkova recalled that such trade tensions, such as possible new tariffs by the US, are not a precedent. She expressed hope that a new trade war would be avoided, emphasizing that the EU has the tools to respond, including the introduction of a digital tax for large American technology companies.

Tsvetelina Penkova stated categorically that Europe must strive for technological and industrial independence, while at the same time ensuring social justice and economic stability. Bulgaria has the opportunity to play a key role in this process if it takes advantage of its potential in the energy and defense sectors.
