The Synod of the Protestant Church in Germany (PGC) is meeting today for its annual meeting in the southern city of Wurzburg, DPA reported. The main focus of the meeting is "Escape, migration and human rights", BTA specifies.

The president of the synod, Anna-Nicole Heinrich, said in advance: "Every person has equal dignity - no matter where they come from."

She added that this is often overlooked in the heated debates surrounding the containment and deportation of migrants. "As churches, we will continue to protect the weak and uphold the human rights of refugees.

The gathering is due to begin with a church service, broadcast on national television ZDF, at the Protestant church "St. Stephen", where Bavarian regional bishop Christian Kopp is scheduled to preach.

At the beginning of the plenary session, a welcome is expected from Josef Schuster, chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany.

On Monday, the agenda is expected to focus on preventing and addressing sexual violence.

As an organization that unites 20 regional churches, the Hanover-based PCC represents 18.6 million Protestants in 12,500 congregations. It is the largest Protestant denomination in the country.
