Dutch police said yesterday that they had arrested five more people for their alleged involvement in attacks on Israeli soccer fans at the end of last week, which were condemned by authorities as anti-Semitic, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The suspects are men aged between 18 and 37 and live in the Netherlands, police said in a statement. Earlier, 63 people were reported arrested.

Earlier yesterday, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoff promised that the Netherlands would focus all its efforts on bringing the perpetrators of the attacks to justice.

“The footage and news from Amsterdam and what we saw this weekend as anti-Semitic attacks against Israelis and Jews are truly shocking and condemnable“, Schoff told a news conference, adding that police and prosecutors were still clarifying the details of what happened.

The attacks were carried out on Friday against fans of the Israeli football team Maccabi Tel Aviv, who had arrived in the Netherlands to watch their favorite team play Ajax Amsterdam. Five people were admitted to hospital. The attacks were condemned as anti-Semitic by Dutch authorities and world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Reuters reported.

German investigators arrested a 17-year-old in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein on Monday for allegedly planning an attack, DPA reported.

Flensburg's chief prosecutor Bernd Winterfeld told DPA that an arrest warrant for the suspect had been issued on November 7 for conspiracy to commit a crime.

Winterfeld said the arrest warrant was based on a "scenario for an attack, but not clearly defined".

According to DPA, the 17-year-old, who has already been in the sights of police once this year, wanted to use a truck to attack.

Prosecutors said the teenager was being investigated for preparing a serious act of violence that threatened the state.

Authorities declined to provide further information about the young man's identity or how investigators were alerted to the plan, saying more information would be provided tomorrow.

The planned attack is reminiscent of the deadly terrorist attack on a Berlin Christmas market in December 2016. Then an Islamist terrorist hijacked a truck and drove it into a Christmas market near Kurfürstendamm, the main shopping street in western Berlin, killing 13 people and injuring about 70, some seriously.

The attacker fled to Italy, where he was shot dead by police.

Police in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai said they had detained a 62-year-old man today after he drove his car into people exercising at a local sports center and then fled, the Associated Press and BTA reported.

The injured were admitted to four hospitals. More than 20 injured people were brought to one hospital alone.

Police identified the man only by his surname Fan, in accordance with the practice of Chinese authorities. The police statement said the car hit "a number" of people today.

It was not immediately clear whether the incident was an attack or an accident. Police said the investigation was ongoing.

The incident occurred on the eve of the annual air show in the Chinese city of Zhuhai.

The sports center in the city's Xiangzhou district regularly attracts hundreds of residents. After the incident, the center announced it would close until further notice.

China has seen a number of attacks in which suspects appear to target random people, such as schoolchildren, the AP noted.
