Poland sets conditions for handover of MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine - 1

Poland expressed readiness to transfer MiG fighters -29 to Ukraine, but stipulates that NATO provide additional protection of Polish airspace. According to Polsat News, Polish President Andrzej Duda discussed this issue with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, as quoted by Focus.

„We still have one MiG squadron flying missions in our airspace. If we decide to transfer them to Ukraine, NATO must guarantee the protection of our skies”, Duda said, stressing that the Polish army still relies on these aircraft to provide security.

The president also pointed out that Poland provides logistical assistance to Ukraine on a daily basis, as it plays a key role as a transit hub for supplies and resources. He emphasized that without the Polish infrastructure, the situation for Ukraine would be “extremely difficult.“

Poland refuses to transfer MiG-29 to Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented that despite the initial agreement with NATO, Poland has given an additional reason not to transfer its fighter jets to Kiev. “We really wanted the MiGs from Poland, but they did not provide us with them, as they did not have enough of their own. We agreed with NATO to provide a police mission for protection, but Poland did not provide us with the planes, and another obstacle appeared, Zelensky noted.

This situation highlights the complexity of military cooperation between the Allies and demonstrates the need for further negotiations on the joint defense of Eastern Europe.
