South Korean prosecutors have ordered the arrest of former the country's Defense Minister Kim Jong-hyun for his alleged role in President Yoon Suk-yeol's decision on Tuesday to impose martial law, Yonhap news agency reported, as cited by Reuters and BTA.
Kim, who resigned on Wednesday, was seen as a key figure in South Korea's brief declaration of martial law on Tuesday. A high-ranking military official and the evidence gathered on a motion by opposition members to impeach Yun point to Kim as the initiator of the emergency measure.
Yun survived an impeachment vote in parliament yesterday, but the leader of his own party said the president would eventually have to step down.
The prosecution's special investigation team questioned Kim, who voluntarily appeared before the Seoul District Prosecutor's Office at around 1:30 a.m. local time today (16:30 GMT yesterday). The prosecutor's office has not yet made a statement on the case.
Three opposition parties have filed a complaint with prosecutors against Yun, Kim and South Korean army chief Park Ahn-su, accusing them of treason, according to Reuters.
