The rebels, who after a two-week lightning offensive, captured Damascus and announced that they who overthrew Syrian President Bashar Assad, introduced a curfew in the Syrian capital, reported France Press, quoted by BTA.

It will be in effect until 5 p.m. local time (2 a.m. GMT) tomorrow morning. The curfew went into effect at 4 p.m. today local time (1pm GMT).

Throughout Syria, Assad's opponents are jubilant that his regime has fallen, and in some places they are toppling statues of him and his father. In Damascus, citizens entered the residence of the Assad regime, which was earlier looted. In the presidency, one of the halls was set on fire.

Rebels reportedly ransacked institutional buildings looking for Assad's men. Attacks by armed men against diplomatic missions in the capital were also reported.

After Assad's fall from power, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Jalali assured that his government is reaching out to opposition forces and is ready to hand over its functions to a transitional government, the Associated Press reported.

Earlier today, the head of the jihadist organization that led the rebellion that overthrew Assad also arrived in Damascus. Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani said in a televised address that what is happening in Syria is irreversible. Then footage uploaded to a social channel of his organization showed him kissing the ground of Damascus.

France Pred reports that Al Jawlani also visited the famous Damascus Umayyad Mosque, where he delivered a speech to his supporters. Upon entering the shrine, located in the Old City of Damascus, al-Jowlani was greeted by a crowd chanting "Allah Akbar," according to footage released by Syrian media.
