At least four people were killed and more than 40 were injured in an explosion at a Red Cross charity fair in Tak province in northwestern Thailand, the Thairath newspaper reported.

According to the newspaper, the incident occurred on Friday at 11:30 p.m. local time. Police have detained two teenage suspects, aged 16 and 17, who may have detonated the explosive device, killing two people on the spot, while two others died of their wounds in hospital.

Thailand's Tak province is located far from popular tourist routes and borders Myanmar's Karen state, which is engulfed in civil conflict, where a local armed ethnic Karen group is fighting government forces. In April this year, as a result of clashes between the Myanmar army and ethnic rebels, 3.5 thousand refugees arrived in the Thai border town of Mae Sot in Tak province. Subsequently, the Thai authorities stated that the situation at the border had normalized.
