Kaia Kallas: EU approves new sanctions against Russia, discusses situation in Georgia and Syria - 1

Today, the foreign ministers of the European Union will approve new sanctions against Russia. This was announced by the European High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, before the start of the meeting in Brussels, BTA reports.

She stressed that despite proposals to send peacekeepers to Ukraine, Russia has shown no signs of striving for peace, adding that peace can be achieved if Russia's goals are changed.

Discussion of Georgia and sanctions against Tbilisi
The situation in Georgia will also be discussed during the meeting. Kallas said that the EU may impose sanctions on Tbilisi for its actions against the opposition, which could lead to a ban on visa-free travel. She pointed out that by December 29, when the Georgian president will be replaced, serious changes in the situation may occur.

EU relations with Syria

The High Representative also mentioned the discussion of the situation in Syria. According to Kallas, the EU wants to see Syria as a peaceful and free country. She announced that an EU representative would visit Damascus to discuss future relations with the new Syrian leadership.
