Guterres condemns escalation between Israel and Yemen - 1

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' spokesman condemned the escalation between Israel and Yemen last night and said that Israeli airstrikes on Sanaa international airport, Red Sea ports and Yemeni power plants were cause for concern, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

Israel said last night that it had carried out strikes on multiple targets linked to the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, including Sanaa international airport, and Houthi media reported that at least six people were killed.

„Israeli airstrikes on Sanaa international airport, Red Sea ports and "The power plants in Yemen are particularly worrying," Guterres' spokesman told a briefing, expressing concern about the risk of further escalation in the region.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was boarding a plane at the airport when it was attacked. He said one crew member was injured.

The Israeli military said it had struck military infrastructure in the ports of Hodeidah, Salif and Ras Qanatib on Yemen's west coast, in addition to the airport. Power plants in the country were also hit.

The Houthi-controlled Saba news agency reported that three people were killed in the strikes on the airport, three were also killed in Hodeidah, and 40 people were wounded.

The Houthis later said they were ready to respond quickly to the attack and to meet "escalation with escalation," the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV reported.

The Houthis regularly launch drones and missiles at Israel in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview with Channel 14 that Israel's campaign against the Houthis was only just beginning. “We are just getting started with them,“ he said.
