Special Counsel David Weiss has criticized outgoing US President Joe Biden for his accusations that investigations against his son Hunter were unfair.
The assessment is contained in his report released Monday by the US Department of Justice, which serves as the country's attorney general.
The special counsel says Biden's allegations of selective targeting of his son are “baseless and false“.
“Other presidents have pardoned family members, but no one has used it to criticize Justice Department officials based solely on false accusations,“ Weiss said.
According to him, public officials who accuse prosecutors of political bias “undermine public confidence in the judicial system“.
“With his statements, the president unfairly questions the loyalty to principles not only of employees at the Department of Justice, but of all public officials who make difficult decisions in good faith“, he noted.
“I investigated two cases against Mr. Hunter Biden because he broke the law“, Weiss said, emphasizing that throughout his work on them he remained “impervious to political influence“.
“In addition to the fact that these cases were not selective, they embodied the uniform application of justice – "No matter who you are or what your last name is, you are answerable to the law just like everyone else in the United States," the special counsel concluded.
