Seoul police, presidential guard discuss arrest warrant for head of state - 1

Representatives of the police, the anti-corruption investigation department and the Korean presidential security service have discussed the arrest warrant for the head of state, Yonhap reported.

On January 3, a joint investigation team of police and government officials failed to detain the president because the head of the security service forbade a search of the residence. The head of the anti-corruption agency later said that his officers would carefully prepare for a second attempt. According to some reports, the police plan to involve up to 1,000 investigators in the arrest.

On January 7, the court again issued an arrest warrant for the president from the anti-corruption department. His lawyers insist that the order is invalid because they say the department lacks the authority to investigate the rebellion. The department has said that the rebellion involved abuse of power.

On January 10, the head of the presidential security service, Park Chung-joon, resigned. When questioned by police, he stated that the parties should avoid direct violence and bloodshed. The same position was expressed by the acting president of the Republic of Korea, Vice Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok.
