During Russia's massive attack on Ukraine on January 15, 2025, NATO deployed Norwegian F-35 fighters based in Poland for the first time, the NATO Air Force Command reported on the social network X.
"Two Norwegian F-35 fighters based in Poland were activated in response to a massive attack by the Russian Air Force. "This is the first time that Norwegian aircraft have been deployed to actively defend Polish airspace, demonstrating the Alliance's commitment to NATO's eastern flank," the statement said.
The Norwegian fighter jets have been in Poland since December 2024. The NASAMS air defense systems and F-35 fighter jets are stationed in Rzeszow, Poland. These assets are intended to protect the logistics center through which Western aid to Ukraine is sent.
Along with the fighter jets and air defense systems, 100 Norwegian servicemen have also arrived in Poland. These forces will monitor the security of the transportation of equipment destined for Ukraine through the center in Rzeszow.
The NATO mission was deployed with a delay. The reason for this is that the ship Finlandia Seaways, hired by the Norwegian military to transport the equipment, ran aground in the port of Stavanger, Norway.
