First in Chicago: Trump begins deporting migrants just a day after taking office - 1

Donald Trump will begin fulfilling his campaign promises to massively deport illegal immigrants on January 21 - the day after he takes office, writes The Wall Street Journal, citing its sources.

According to their information, the first "large-scale operation against migrants" will begin in Chicago on Tuesday morning and will continue until the end of the week. About 200 US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers will participate in the operation. Their target will be mainly illegal immigrants with a criminal past, the newspaper writes. After Chicago, anti-immigrant protests will be held in New York, Los Angeles, Denver and Miami, the publication said.

Earlier, CNN reportedthat Trump's team is finalizing work on a package of "tough immigration" legislative measures that will be unveiled within hours of his inauguration on January 20. According to CNN sources, they "will launch a crackdown on immigrants already living in the United States, as well as those seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border." Plans for large-scale deportation of illegal immigrants include checks by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in metropolitan areas, sending additional Pentagon resources to the southern US border and imposing greater restrictions on entry into the country.

The migration crisis has become one of the key issues in the US election race. Republicans have blamed the administration of current President Joe Biden and Democrats for its sharp escalation. Trump has repeatedly stated that after taking office he intends to conduct the largest operation in American history to deport illegal immigrants. It was reported that in the first stages it is planned to expel 1 million people from the country.
