Christian Vigenin: BSP must show character and resilience to defend its policies in government - 1

„BSP must show enough character and face, resilience, to defend its priorities and policies in the new government and for people to see that it was worth being part of it. This was stated by the Deputy Chairman of the BSP and Head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the EP, Christian Vigenin, to the BG On Air television. He specified that if the Socialists had not agreed to participate in the government, the country would have gone to another election. „I don't think that would have been better for Bulgaria, nor for the BSP“, commented the Deputy Chairman of the BSP.

Christian Vigenin emphasized that the next few weeks will be important, when the government program is being negotiated – it must specifically specify the commitments set out. “The first budget for 2025 will be very important, and it will be difficult. I really want to see part of our priorities in it. For the BSP, this budget is key and we hope that the other partners in the government will show understanding, because if they do not, then we will all have a problem“, he warned.

By entering the government, the BSP has managed to defend many of its positions, but the explanation should have been clearer and faster, so as not to give the impression that the party is ready for anything, just to enter the government, explained Vigenin.

The Deputy Chairman of the BSP confirmed his thesis that the party has a signed agreement for governance, and is not in a coalition: “This is not a classic political coalition. This is an agreement to create a governing majority that supports a government.“ He believes it is necessary for the Socialists to behave rationally in government. It should not seem that the BSP has embedded its shadow in this government“, commented Vigenin.

On the topic of Bulgaria's entry into the eurozone, the BSP deputy chairman specified that the socialists have no problem with postponing membership in the community for a while: “We support membership in the eurozone when we consider that Bulgaria is ready, but not only with these formal criteria, but when we are sure that this will not negatively affect income, investment, economic growth and when the necessary measures are taken to prevent possible problems related to speculation and price increases.“

Kristian Vigenin sees no reason to continue military aid to Ukraine, especially since serious efforts are being made to end the war and a trend towards negotiations – this time for resolving the conflict, the BSP points to 2022, he recalled.

Regarding the upcoming election of the BSP chairman, Kristian Vigenin, who is one of the candidates, stated that above all, a positive conversation should be held about the policy and ideas that will revive the BSP. He himself will rely on a positive approach with specific proposals for change, enshrined in his program “For a strong BSP! Together!“ He specified that he is a supporter of direct elections, because every socialist deserves the right to speak out.
